Succulents need deep, infrequent watering , especially during their growing season and when they are young and establishing roots. Only water when the soil is completely dry and err on the side of underwatering. Watering too frequently is the most common way to kill succulents!

It is certainly possible to grow succulents in glass terrariums, but there are challenges. Use only open terrariums with plenty of airflow, as the humidity in sealed terrariums is too high for succulents. Terrariums usually do not have drainage holes and glass does not breathe, so be extra careful not to over-water . Left on their own, Sempervivum rosettes grow into tidy, mounding clusters. They are also particularly easy to propagate by hand because they produce new offsets or "chicks" on stolons (horizontal stems). When the chick is at least 1.0" in diameter, cut or gently pull it from its mother rosette. While standard Sempervivum (Hens & Chicks) are known for sending out young plant offsets on stolons from a central mother rosette, new growth in S. heuffelii arises through crown division. S. heuffelii varieties develop offsets right in the middle of an older rosette. As leaves emerge and enlarge, the clump expands to make room for the new, individual rosettes.

STRETCHED OR ETIOLATED
Succulents can grow tall and spindly when they are short on sunlight. As soon as you see signs of stretching, move the plant into sunnier conditions or install a grow light above it. Colors can come back with more light, but stretched succulents have to be pruned back into shape. Hardy succulents tend to stretch easily indoors; make sure they have plenty of light or move them outside.
