One of the branches was knocked and broke off. Will it regrow roots if I put it in soil or lay it on top of soil?

Lay it on top of the soil and gently press down on it. Then be sure it gets plenty of light and a bit more moisture than you would give a rooted specimen. Please note, these are slow to root so be sure to give it a few months.
