That depends on the type of variegation. These particular plants have enough cholorphyll in them to grow on their own roots.
I thought moon cacti could only grow grafted in another cactus cause it has no chlorophyll Gymnocalycium mihanovichii f. variegata - Variegated Moon Cactus [bare root] [2.75-3.25"]
