First, get an appropriately sized pot and enough gritty soil to fill it. Next, determine how deep you want to plant your cactus in the pot. The roots should be entirely buried and the plant should be able to stand on its own. Fill the pot partially with soil, then rest the roots of your cactus on the soil. Use one hand to hold the cactus upright and the other to fill the rest of the pot with soil. Wait about a week before watering to allow any cut roots to dry and heal. That helps prevent rot.
