will snails bother these plants? I also live in Zone 7 but many of my neighbors grow this plant.

Snails can be a problem. One way to deal with snails is to fill a small cup with beer (or proofed yeast in sugar water). Bury this cup in your garden such that only the top 1/2" is exposed. Then wet the soil and plants around this cup. The yeast smell will attract the snails which will fall into the cup and drown in the liquid below.
