The hair on Espostoa melanostele is made up of a bunch of small filaments called trichomes. These trichomes are produced by the plant naturally and act as a sunscreen. They filter out the harshest rays of the sun so the plant doesn't get burned. However, they still allow enough light to hit the plant's green surface for photosynthesis to occur.
