The Opuntia are a genus (or small group) of cacti known as the prickly pears. They feature flattened pads for stems and are known for their intimidating spines. Some of these spines are long and sharp while others are short and barbed, designed to dig into skin. Species of Opuntia differ in how their spines look.
Many species of Opuntia have been utilized by humans for a long time for food, water and forage for domesticated animals.
