As a general rule of thumb, if the Opuntia has few spines in the picture, the mature plant will have few spines, but if the Opuntia has many spines in the picture, the mature plant will have many spines.
Please note that although the main spines vary in number between varieties, the barbed glochids are always present. They're much smaller but more invasive.
