what does protect from rain mean?

Sempervivum (Hens & Chicks)
So many of the Sems indicate that they need to be protected from rain. I'm in SE Michigan and my succulent beds get rained on and snowed on - sometimes in the same week. Do I need to avoid these plants?

People in climates like yours (and wetter!) can certainly grow Sempervivum just fine under those conditions. It's great that you have raised beds and gritty, well-draining soil is also helpful. Rainy climates become an issue when you plant in hollows or have heavy, clay soil.
