How do remove the chicks when they are under the mother? Does one cut the chicks off, break off, or remove Mama?

If the chicks are so close to the mother plant that they're hard to reach, digging the whole plant up, flipping it over, and gently removing the chicks is the best technique. Once the chicks are removed, simply replant the mother rosette. The mother rosette will be fine once its chicks get removed. It'll likely begin making a new crop of them, depending on the type of Sempervivum.
