Growth rate is determined by care, such that we hesitate to attempt to put an estimate of rate on it. They're certainly faster than cacti and, likely, very similar in rate to the more succulent Euphorbia.
Without the bloom, this plant appears very similar to a branched cactus, very thick lime green stems. In bright sunlight, the plant can flush a rust red color. The spine like structures aren't actually all that sharp.
