They can have a dormant period in the summer but they don't have to. If they can see the sun and experience some drought during the summer, that increases the chance that they'll go dormant. Plants can distinguish the time of year though the subtle changes in the quality of sunlight, even if they aren't outside.
For you, however, not much changes. The plant will still let you know when it's thirsty. Just be on the lookout for wrinkly, curled or flaccid leaves as those are your cue to water. Whether that happens during the summer or once fall comes is besides the point.
