Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is, mostly, a fuss-free plant that does well in many conditions. It needs a bit more water than other succulents so starting with a once a week watering schedule should be great. If it shows signs of water stress (wrinkly, flexible leaves) then you'll want to water even more frequently.
This plant likes partial sun and would do well in an east facing window where it can receive lots of morning sun but catch some shade in the afternoon. If you grow it outside, partial sun is very important as too much sunlight will cause the leaves to burn, like a sunburn in humans. In the winter, try to get it even more light by either placing it in a south facing window or shining a grow light on it. This will encourage the plant to bloom.
Any old succulent or cactus soil will work for this plant. You can even mix your own by combining soil and perlite (or just a coarse sand) in a 2:1 ratio.
Fertilizing is not necessary, but to encourage its gorgeous winter blooms, you can feed it in the winter with a dilute, balanced fertilizer.
