Soil depth depends on the plant. Something like Sedum, Sempervivum or Echeveria don't need deep roots to grow well. Their roots are fibrous and spread outward from the plant. Meanwhile, Lithops and split rock have tap roots (like a carrot) that like to grow deep within the soil. They need a much deeper pot.
