I have two suggestions:
1) This could be an issue of underwatering. If underwatered, many Portulacaria will drop leaves. Really let the water flow out of the drainage holes on the pot, assuming the next point isn't true.
2) It could be that your soil is too rich so, although you're watering infrequently, the soil is retaining the water so well that your plant is rotting anyway.
