Golden barrel cactus has much thicker spines than this plant. Also, it tends to stay as a ball shape in maturity, while this one, ironically enough, trades its ball shape for a column shape.
The term "barrel cactus" is a common name given to many cacti in the genera Ferocactus and Echinocactus. It is not a unified group of cacti in any way and isn't super helpful in identifying them because of that. It's far better to look at the binomial name when identifying plants. They aren't perfect either, but there's a lot more consensus that goes into those names when compared to common names like barrel cactus.
