I'll post a link to our guide on grow lights at the bottom of this post that has specific recommendations built in to it.
Basically, you'll want a full spectrum white light that puts out about 300-800 lumens per square foot. I recommend placing it 6"-12" away from your plants.
I've personally had great success with the Sansi LED bulb. It fits in a heat lamp shroud so it doesn't take up too much space. It puts out good light too and greatly improved the health of my succulents who weren't getting enough light where I was living. The link to the amazon listing for this bulb (among others) is in the grow light guide.
As far as direction goes, it really doesn't matter which direction they shine on your plants from. The plants themselves will adjust how they're growing to bend toward the light anyway.
