Perhaps it's possible, but I wouldn't recommend it. Usually, our plants come in 2" pots to begin with so a whole 0.3 inches across isn't worth losing 0.3 inches of depth for.
A few good uses for pots like these is growing seeds, rooting cuttings or planting rooted plants that you plan to quickly give as gifts. Many plants will outgrow this pot quickly, so the need for a 3.5" pot also grows quickly. I hope this helps!
