There's no rule of thumb in regards to pot size so long as the plant isn't root bound. If the plant is root bound, then it may be time to plant it into a new pot. Just lift the plant out of its current pot and check for an overabundance of roots. If the plant is difficult to remove from its pot, chances are that it's root bound.
As far as spiralling is concerned, it takes a long time for these plants to start. Some sources say it won't even begin spiraling until 12" across. It may just need more time. I hope this helps.
