Succulents can become root bound if grown in the same pot for a few years. Root bound succulents have trouble absorbing water and look thirsty no matter how much you water them. They may become discolored as well or create roots in unexpected places in an effort to find more open soil. If a succulent is displaying any of these symptoms, look at the root ball. Root bound succulents may send roots through the drainage holes on pots, but once these are removed, they should be removed from the pot easily. If you see little dirt and mostly roots, it's time for a bigger pot.
