Yes, it can be cut back. Just be sure that your plant is receiving enough light before doing so. It should be receiving around 6 hours of sunlight or 12 hours on a full spectrum grow light. This just ensures that the plant has enough energy to recover from the cutting.
Once you cut the leaves off, allowing the plant to go dormant for a while will be healthy for it. Just stop watering it for a month or so, allowing the leaves to totally dry out. Then resume watering.
