Because of the popularity of Aloe vera, it tends to be dramatically overrepresented in research. As such, the health benefits of other aloes are not well known. What is known is that many aloes contain aloin, a compound known for its antibacterial, antiinflamitory and even anticaner properties. What is also known is that some aloes are mildly toxic.
For a more specific example, Aloe ferox has shown to have the above properties and is useful in boosting the effects of other medication. Research of such things is fairly preliminary though.
