Excellent question! The advantage of a host plant for a Tillandsia in the wild is about maintaining humidity. After it rains in a normally dry habitat, it will stay wetter for a longer period of time around trees or bushes than it will out in the open. For the home environment though, this doesn't mean much, especially if you're misting your Tillandsia regularly.
