Just drenching the plants from above is a fine strategy, especially if you live in a dry area. However, some people don't like to water this way if they have Echeveria, Pachyphytum or Aeonium plants because water can get caught between the leaves, which encourages rot.
If the container has drainage holes, a great way to do it is by placing the whole container in a bucket of water. The soil will absorb the water through these drainage holes and you won't have to worry about water getting stuck between the leaves.
