Planting in dry soil is the best bet and, no matter what, don't water for 7 days. After that 7 day period only water when the soil is dry and the plant shows signs of thirst. Remember, the plant will show you when it's thirsty. If it appears very wrinkly, go ahead and water.
However, there is one exception to this. If the plant is turning wrinkly and you see a new pair of leaves in the middle of the plant, don't water. That means the Lithops is trying to split and is transferring water from its old leaves into its new leaves. Additional water, at this point, will prevent the old leaves from naturally shriveling to make room for the new leaves. That can cause real problems as the new leaves continue to grow bigger. Keep an eye out for this exception especially around November.
