I believe you're right. A sand topdressing would seep through to large particles of Bonsai Jack soil, over time. We have plants on display near our greenhouses that are planted in Bonsai Jack's gritty mix and we never use topdressing with them.
From a functional standpoint, you shouldn't need a topdressing with Bonsai Jack soil but from a decorative standpoint, if you didn't like the look of the Bonsai Jack, you could use our deco pebbles instead. They're a little bigger, so you shouldn't have to worry about them slipping through the cracks of your Bonsai Jack soil. I'll link to one of color of them below. I hope this helps!
